Cherrapunjee is situated in the East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya, 55 km south west of the capital Shillong.

Cherrapunjee is an undulating plateau of rolling hills bisected by deep gorges. Steep cliffs with waterfalls drop down to the plains of Sylhet (Bangladesh) on its southern aspect. The plateau is characterized by a vast tract of grassland on highly drained flats and slopes of largely smooth and undulating hills with isolated patches of forest, which usually occur on slopes and banks of streams and rivulets, as well as gullies and dykes of hillocks (Tripathiet al., 1995)
